The Pedicure Protection Program has been developed to help nail salons adhere to high standards for safe of pedicures. Many of the same principles of safety will also relate to manicures and other nail services.

Nancy King, nail salon expert and well known international educator and consultant to the salon industry on sanitation and disinfection, feels the Pedicure Protection Program will help make the nail salon industry safer for all concerned.

Nancy has extensive experience as an expert witness on salon standards.  She has been retained by prominent lawfirms in many lawsuits for salon injuries and infections.  The training programs and educational materials for Pedicure Protection include valuable information about avoiding injuries in salons and will help you avoid lawsuits resulting from careless practices.

Because of public awareness of certain contagious conditions that have possibly been contracted at some careless nail salons, some people might be more apprehensive about getting pedicures.

Pedicures are Safe!!

Pedicures are perfectly safe if performed properly and if the technicians clean and disinfect their tools and equipment correctly. Every day thousands of people get pedicures and do not get infections.

Positive education for both the nail professional and the public will help resolve many of these issues. The ultimate purpose of the Pedicure Protection Program is safety, education, and certification. The standards that have been developed by this program, not only will make the nail salon a safer facility, but will give confidence to the consumer that the nail salon and the pedicurists that participate in the Pedicure Protection Program have met a higher standard of safety.

How can this be accomplished?

Individual Certification
There are two levels of participation. The individual nail professional may participate on one level, and the salon on the other. There will be educational material from which the nail professional will take an examination. After taking and passing the exam, they will be considered a participant in the Pedicure Protection Program. The information for the exam will be in understandable terms, relevant, and easily applied to everyday use.

Throughout the year, the participant will be sent updated information regarding safety issues. There will be a yearly reapplication by the nail professional to remain a participant. They will be tested on the updated material before re certification to make sure they have read and understood this new information. Each year the nail professional participates, they will be given a certificate with the Pedicure Protection emblem, that can be displayed to the public.

For information about the next Certification date and location see Salon Professionals page.

Salon Consultation and Certification

The salon will be certified after a consultant from the Pedicure Protection Program come to the facility, and evaluates their cleaning and disinfecting procedures and products. The consultant will make recommendations for alternatives and provide guidelines and demonstration to the salon staff to raise the level of safety for pedicure services. The process may take 2-3 hours depending on the size of the salon. The consultant will be available for questions during that time. Once this process is completed, the nail salon will be give both a certificate and window decal showing the public that their facility has been certified by the Pedicure Protection Program.

Advantages of the Program

  1. Safety - The primary advantage is safety of the client. Proper cleaning and disinfecting keeps the spread of infections and contagious conditions such as fungus toenails, warts, athlete’s foot, viruses, and bacterial infections.
  2. Education - The nail professional will be highly educated regarding safety and contagious conditions by working directly with experts within the medical and nail salon fields. There will be regular interaction in the form of e-mails and by telephone in order to have questions answered as they arise. The technicians will be able to recognize many health conditions of the feet and feel confident that they are responding appropriately.
  3. Advertising - The Pedicure Protection Program will make the public aware through the media and the internet on safety standards within the salon industry and the positive effects of this program. There will be listings of the participating salons on our website.
  4. Public Confidence - The consumer knowing of the advance safety measures taken for their protection, will more likely request a pedicurist that participates in the Pedicure Protection Program. In addition to media and internet advertising, there will be certificates and window decals that will alert the consumer of the salon’s participation and certification.
